Genre: Realistic Fiction? Historic Fiction?

  1. In my opinion, this book is historical fiction. This book takes place in the Dominican Republic during the time Rafael Trujillo was president. Trujillo was a vicious dictator who practiced torture and other cruel punishments for any protester. The novel fictionalizes the lives of the three sisters, Minerva, Maria Teresa, and Patria Mirabel and the daily lives of the butterflies.

    1. I agree that this book is historic fiction. This is because through these characters, she stresses the need to remember the past, even in times of pain, while also striving happiness in the present and the future. Perhaps more importantly, that the real heroes are people who fight their own fears in order to fight injustice.

    2. Why do you think government wanted to kill the Butterflies?

    3. I think it was Trujillo behind the murders of the Mirabel sisters and he wanted to be rid of them because they were behind the rebellion. Minerva was the main mastermind that was planning to overthrow Trujillo and wanted to expose all of his secrets. The president couldn"t afford that to happen so he ordered for his men to murder them.

    4. I agree. I guess since they started rebelling and protesting, President Trujillo wanted to get rid of the Butterfiles fast, and very secretly.

  4. In my opinion, the novel had mixed emotions. There were happy times, sad times, angry times. Each sister went through their own battle especially Minevra, in my opinion.

  5. I think I would recommend this novel to other readers because it shows the real emotions these Dominican women went through and the rights they fought for. Even though they didn't win, people stood up for them and fought for their cause.

P.S I'm pretty sure Breana and I are the only ones on this blog making an effort to respond.... Can you please just write about your opinion on the book, @Camille Rivera?

  6. Okay I have a question... Who was your favorite character and what did you admire about them the most?

  7. I would have to say Minerva> She was very straight forward and headstrong, however that is what got her killed. I admire that she didn't stop for what she believed in. She pushed her point of view.

  8. I'd have to say my favorite character was also Minerva. She was the one that stood out the most to me. She wasn't afraid to speak up her mind to anyone. She was proud to be herself and didn't let anyone stop her, she was loud and proud.

I also have a question; If we were the girls how would you react to the situation with Trujillo?

    1. I would probably be like Dede. Afraid because I would always be afraid to get out my house or to speak up to someone who has greater power than I do. It would be like walking on eggshells. How about you Celina?

    2. I guess I'd be like Patria; the one that tries to keep everything under control and makes sure no one would get into any more trouble than has already happened.

    3. I think I would be like Maria Teresa because if my sister was fighting for a cause that I also believed in, I would follow her steps to overthrow Trujillo. Also, I would fight because I would feel safe fighting with my sister if I were her and wouldn't want her to get into trouble. What really matters to me is helping my family, no matter how bad their situation is.

  9. I feel that the whole Mirabel sisters have great personalties. Each one has different personalties which helps them backup on the events of the story. My favorite sister is Minerva because she is more than a leader than all the others. She's determined and believes in righteous; she never gives up and never keeps quiet.

  10. Do you think if Maribel sisters were alive today, they would be proud of what they tried to do in Dominican Republic?

    1. I think they would be proud of what they accomplished because they fought for what they believed in and didn't want Trujillo to win. They would be able to see what an effect their deaths caused Dominican Republic's citizens to do to avenge them.
